Looking back - Two years of EdTech Literacy
It was my second year as a Technology Coordinator. I had just begun to work at my current school. It was an unsuspected change to a better workplace because now I had a lot more resources than before. I remember being confident of my technology skills but not enough to be called an educational technology leader. As I once wrote my goal statement (for my MAET studies) I described my present role as a type of interpreter. My main challenge was to link my technical background as a Computer Science engineer into an academic setting because I wanted to become a better advisor for using technology creatively and efficiently in a learning environment.
Reading my old concerns and goals, made me appreciate even more the opportunity of finishing my MAET online degree. Understanding the TPACK framework provided me with a clear guide of the type of knowledge that I have to continually acquire. I also learned to be vigilant of instrumental thinking, a very common mistake that educational technology leaders make. As I finished each course, I got to understand even better my school teachers and students. You could say that I became a good interpreter. What I didn’t expect was that I would become a teacher myself. I first started giving technology workshops and now I will soon be an IB Diploma Programme ITGS teacher. My next task will be to organize my time efficiently so my current responsibilities as Technology Coordinator are not affected with my new teaching position. Luckily, my MAET courses also provided me with very useful tools for getting things done.
Just as I wrote two years ago, my long‐term goal is to become an influential authority in educational technology, so I can help my country’s (Guatemala) education system. I feel that I’m finishing one very important step toward that goal. I continue to love what I do, and I sincerely hope that in a small way I’m helping to create a brighter future for my country and especially the people close to me.
